American Express Stands for Small; Provides New Offers, Discounts and Marketing Tools for U.S. Small Businesses

Will help small businesses keep in touch, keep up productivity and keep selling, despite social distancing

April 30, 2020

Last week, American Express announced ‘Stand for Small,’ a coalition of now more than 50 companies across media, technology, consumer goods, professional services, and many other industries, that have come together on one digital platform to provide meaningful support to small businesses as they navigate the impacts of Covid-19.

Through Stand for Small, small businesses can more easily discover and access valuable offers, tools and resources from coalition partners as they work to reduce their operating expenses, manage their teams remotely, enhance their digital capabilities, and address other needs during this pandemic.

In support of U.S. small business owners and in support of the spirit of Stand for Small platform, American Express is offering discounted subscriptions for eligible small merchants to social media tool Ripl Pro and customer service tool Numa, free listings with restaurant platform Resy, and access to new templates and marketing resources to promote their businesses through

Abby and Dan Savell, owners of L.A. Percussion & Backline Rentals, a percussion instrument rental company in Los Angeles, CA, pivoted their usual way of doing business after an immediate halt to operations. Many of their clients are live music event organizers, such as touring orchestras and musicians.

“Cancelling live music events was one of the first measures that cities took to help stop the spread COVID-19, and will most likely be one of the last restrictions lifted,” said owner Abby Savell. “Because most of our usual operations have halted, we are finding ourselves with more time, so we’re using this space to get creative with projects we didn’t previously have time for, and we’re finding joy out of that.”

The business owners use Ripl to stay connected with their customers by posting pictures and video examples across all of their social media channels. They especially look to reach composers, sound designers, and musicians with new ideas while many of their customers are also using this time to engage in their own creative flow.

Ray Puglsey, owner of running footwear and apparel company Potomac River Running with locations in Virginia and D.C., also pivoted his business model. They were faced with a large inventory order they initially thought they would have no problem selling after a mild winter on the U.S.’ east coast.

Ray’s stores are now offering digital shoe fittings, video sales conferencing with customers, and curbside pickup. He is also heavying up on social media marketing and relying on Numa, a customer servicing tool that helps customer calls and inquiries to be answered.

“We had to act quickly, we didn’t have a choice,” said Pugsley. “I’m fortunate to have a team that could help pivot our strategy to move our inventory, but we are still small and the task at hand was no small feat. What we had planned to roll out over time in terms of expanding our digital sales offerings and customer experience had to happen almost overnight."

Shop Small celebrates small businesses ranging from retail stores and restaurants to fitness studios and salons and everything in-between.
