Girls Get A Lesson In Football Skills From Albion Players Sophie Harris And Emily Simpkins

November 6, 2018
Brighton, United Kingdom

A free football day for girls took place during October half term, (Thursday, 25 October) at the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre, Lancing. Delivered by Albion in the Community (AITC), Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club’s (BHAFC) official charity, and supported by American Express Company (NYSE: AXP), the session forms part of the charity’s wider efforts to encourage more girls to play football throughout Sussex.

The day-long sessions are held four times a year on the Community Pitch at the Amex Training Ground, with up to 60 free places available at each session to girls of all playing abilities (including beginners). The initiative is funded by American Express, Official Shirt Sponsor of BHAFC’s FA Women’s Super League team. This year 239 girls from across Sussex have participated in the programme.

The day includes warm ups, shooting, dribbling, small–sided matches and tournaments. Amex colleagues help organise the sessions and provide support as assistant coaches and match officials. The girls participate in practical drills to help develop their technical skills and self-confidence and encourage teamwork. As part of the session, AITC’s nutritionists delivered workshops focusing on healthy eating and the benefits of physical activity.

Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Sophie Harris, midfielder Emily Simpkins and official mascot Gully joined last week’s session to provide encouragement and present awards. A signed shirt for ‘Best Player’ was awarded to Phoebe Leech (aged 9) from Worthing. Madison Medhurst (aged 7) from Eastbourne, received a signed football for ‘Most Improved player’ and Henfield’s Olivia Taylor (aged 9), was awarded a medal for ‘Best Attitude.’

Every participant received a goodie bag containing a fixture list and a free ticket to the team’s FA Women’s Super League match against Yeovil Town Ladies FC on Sunday 28 October – which the Seagulls won 2-1.

Hope Powell, Brighton & Hove Albion’s manager, said: “It is brilliant to know that the club’s official charity is so committed to encouraging more girls to play football and for Albion in the Community to have the continued support of American Express and its employees is fantastic.

“Events like these free football days provide a superb introduction to the game for dozens of girls and I know that many of those who have attended previous events have continued to play football on a regular basis.

“We were delighted to be able to offer free tickets to the game with Yeovil to all the girls who took part and it was great to see so many of them there on the day.”
