Aspiring Entrepreneurs Of The Future Gain An Insight Into The World Of Business

Sixty Year Five pupils (aged 9-10) at Bolnore Village Primary School, near Haywards Heath, had a school day with a difference last week, (Thursday, October 18, 2018) when they were given an introduction to business and enterprise, through a series of ‘The Apprentice’ style tasks and challenges.

The Business in a Box Enterprise day delivered by Albion in the Community (AITC), the official charity of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club (BHAFC), in partnership with American Express Company (NYSE: AXP) helps pupils learn and apply basic business principles, develop team working, communication and presentation skills.

Working in small teams to create a company name, logo and agreeing team roles, pupils were tasked with designing, producing and packaging a BHAFC themed product (bars of soap presented in a box).

Over the course of the day, 20 Amex colleagues acted as mentors to help the budding entrepreneurs consider their target market, costs and profit margins, prepare a marketing campaign (posters, flyers, website page, TV and radio adverts) and deliver a business pitch to a panel of judges.

Rob Josephs, curriculum development officer at AITC, said: “We offer schools across Sussex a range of collapsed curriculum days, at their school or at the Amex Stadium. These enrichment days help introduce pupils at an early age to valuable life skills (including communication, resilience, team work and financial capability) which will become integral to their development throughout their education and future careers.”

Amex colleagues are able to bring hands on experience and share commercial insights into the world of work. The session is a great way to build pupils’ confidence, presentation skills and business acumen, while having fun and working as a team. We were impressed by what the pupils were able to achieve in only one day. Their enthusiasm, range of ideas and engagement were second to none.”
