  • 80% OF BUSINESS TRAVELLERS THINK TRIPS ABROAD ARE ENHANCED BY THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE
  • BUT AVERAGE AMOUNT OF FREE TIME ON WORK TRIP IS JUST TWO HOURS
  • DESPITE TRAVELLING TO SOME OF THE MOST VIBRANT DESTINATIONS IN THE WORLD, HOTEL ROOMS ARE THE MOST COMMON SIGHT FOR BUSINESS TRAVELLERS AS MOST DON’T VISIT LOCAL ATTRACTIONS

The vast majority (80%) of business travellers think their experiences abroad are improved by leisure time and the opportunity to explore the local area, according to research conducted on behalf of the British Airways American Express® Accelerating Business Card.

The results show that four-in-five (82%) of those that travel for work do so at least monthly, while 58% travel for business at least once a week. Business owners travel even more frequently, with 87% doing so once a month or more.

However, most business travellers get scant time to enjoy the destinations they visit: with an average of less than two hours (1.7) of free time per day. Over a quarter (26%) of respondents said they often have no free time at all on their trips.

Of the sights that people get to see, hotels (63%) top the list followed by meeting rooms (52%) and train stations (43%), while just 38% get to experience the main local tourist attraction. Over two fifths (43%) of people don’t make it to a local bar or restaurant.

This is all despite the fact business travellers jet off to some of the world’s most vibrant destinations, with Paris the top business destination, followed by New York, Amsterdam, Berlin and Dubai.

Acknowledging that the reality of business travel is not currently matching up to its potential for many of us, American Express has teamed up with travel photographer and lifestyle content creator Steve Booker to help provide some inspiration when it comes to getting more out of your travels.

Commenting on the partnership, Steve Booker said: “There are so many things to do and places to explore, but when you’re travelling for business free time is in short supply. To help, I’ve shared some of my top recommendations, in the most common destinations for business travel, many of which I’ve picked up when I’ve been travelling for business myself. Finding opportunities to enjoy these experiences, whether it’s between meetings or over a lunch break, has been crucial in helping me to grow my business, not only for the new perspectives they’ve brought but also the contacts and opportunities I’ve made as a result.”

The partnership celebrates the launch of British Airways American Express® Accelerating Business Card. Designed to help business owners maximise their company spending and earn travel benefits, it is the UK’s only business credit card that enables owners of small and medium-sized enterprises to earn both accelerated On Business Points and Avios with British Airways.

Colin O'Flaherty, Vice President and General Manager, Global Commercial Services, UK at American Express, said: “Our research indicates that business travellers perhaps aren’t getting the most out of their trips. Business owners are always on the lookout for ways to take their companies to the next level, and finding opportunities and inspiration further afield is a major part of that.

“Cities such as Paris and New York offer inspiring sights and experiences in abundance, much of which can be accessed even within a two-hour window. We want to help business travellers maximise their trips abroad and the British Airways American Express Accelerating Business Card can help to do just that – it’s a new Card to help businesses and business owners go further.”

Ailis Gavan, On Business Manager at British Airways, said: “In today’s business environment, standing still isn’t an option. To develop and nurture a successful small business, owners need to scope out opportunities and feel inspired wherever they may be. That’s why we’ve partnered with American Express to design the British Airways American Express Accelerating Business Card for them and their business.”
