American Express has been honored with the 2023 Business Group on Health Best Employers: Excellence in Health & Well-being Award, marking the 12th year the company has received this recognition.

Business Group on Health is a non-profit organization representing large employers’ perspectives on optimizing workforce strategy.

The award recognizes companies and organizations for their outstanding commitment to advancing employee well-being through comprehensive and innovative benefits and initiatives, company leadership and culture, among other criteria.

This recognition reinforces Amex’s dedication to providing colleagues with health benefits and programs that support their holistic well-being, which encompasses their physical, financial, and mental health.

“In the face of ongoing challenges, the award winners all enhance the lives of employees and their families through their innovative health and well-being programs,” said Ellen Kelsay, President and CEO of Business Group on Health. “In addition, their leading-edge programs address critical issues such as health equity, Social Determinants of Health and affordability, with an eye toward better health and well-being outcomes for everyone.”

American Express was specifically honored for Excellence in Mental Health, Excellence in Health Equity, and Excellence in Global Health & Well-being, reflecting the following commitments:

Excellence in Mental Health Award:

Amex's Healthy Minds program, a key pillar of our comprehensive colleague benefits offerings for more than 10 years,  continues to provide global team members with mental health support and resources in a range of areas. For example:

  • The program offers colleagues and their loved ones free access to mental health counseling among a network of licensed counselors, both in-person and virtually. Colleagues can work with a counselor personalized to their individual preferences including gender, race, sexual orientation, or reason for seeking support.
  • Colleagues can access programs including suicide prevention, grief and loss support, stress-relief sessions, virtual meditations, and locally relevant initiatives.
  • Amex also offers specialized support for leaders and colleagues through programming that is focused on helping them understand the spectrum of mental health and provides tips, tools, and resources to enhance their own well-being, while they support the well-being of their team members. Additionally, all colleagues can participate in training and a variety of resources to help them connect with and understand their mental health and strategies for coping.

Excellence in Health Equity Award:

Amex’s dedicated DE&I and Well-being and Benefits teams collaborate on integrated strategies to support the company’s diverse colleagues and their families, including robust inclusive benefits policies and practices. For example:

  • The company’s U.S. parental leave policy provides support to all parents welcoming a child through pregnancy, adoption, or surrogacy with 20+ weeks paid leave, regardless of gender.
  • In the U.S., colleagues can receive financial support up to $70k to help with costs of adoption and/or surrogacy, regardless of gender.

Excellence in Global Health & Well-being Award:

Colleagues across the globe can access comprehensive healthcare, insurance offerings, and caregiver benefits, including the following:

  • Comprehensive on-site and virtual well-being resources are available to colleagues, including programs and workshops, wellness coaching, nutrition support, fitness, and meditation classes, and more through Amex’s Healthy Living program.
  • Onsite Wellness Centers are available at over 20 offices globally and offer services including free well-being check-ups and screenings, urgent care, and vaccinations. Additionally, telehealth services are available in 14 countries around the world.
