American Express has earned the No. 3 spot on Fortune magazine and Great Place to Work’s 2023 100 Best Companies to Work For® list, published today. This marks American Express’ highest ranking in over two decades of being featured on the list and the fourth consecutive year that the company has ranked in the top 10. Amex is also the highest-ranking financial services company on the list this year.

“This accomplishment belongs to our colleagues,” said Stephen J. Squeri, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “They embrace our Blue Box Values, leading with integrity and backing one another to ensure that we are building a culture where every colleague can feel supported and thrive.”

The 100 Best Companies to Work For list is based on an employee feedback survey conducted by Great Place to Work and other company data weighing factors such as employee retention, satisfaction, agility, and business success. Companies on the annual list stand out for their overall employee experience, defined by high levels of trust, respect, credibility, fairness, pride, and camaraderie.

Fortune highlights, “For the third year in a row, American Express achieved 100% pay equity across gender globally, and across race in the U.S., unfortunately still a rarity for many firms. It also increased the number of employees who are eligible for company stock options; expanded mental health benefits; and began subsidizing virtual tutoring for workers’ children who need the extra help.”

American Express firmly believes the best way to back our customers is to back our colleagues. We pride ourselves on providing the more than 77,000 colleagues on Team Amex a flexible and inclusive culture with meaningful work and many opportunities to grow throughout their career. We also offer competitive compensation and benefits to support colleagues holistic well-being—their physical, financial, and mental health. Some highlights include:

  • Amex Flex, our enterprise working model, provides flexibility for most of our colleagues to work on a hybrid schedule. Colleagues can also work virtually or fully onsite with this model. Additionally, our Work From Anywhere program provides colleagues 30 days per calendar year to work from a location other than their primary work location without having to come into the office.
  • Commitment to maintaining 100% pay equity for all colleagues and competitive base salaries and incentives that recognize colleagues for their contributions, leadership, and impact, and provide all colleagues with the opportunity to share in the company’s success. Within the last year, we increased the bonus percentage for colleagues at the analyst level and paid well above target bonuses to colleagues, due to the company’s above target performance in 2022.
  • Resources, feedback, and support so colleagues can be and deliver their best every day, including a robust career and development planning tool for colleagues to map out their career journey, aspirations and development goals, and the support they need along the way.
  • A commitment to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture where every voice is valued, teamwork is rewarded, and different perspectives are celebrated.
  • A new global personalized mental health concierge service we added to our industry- leading Healthy Minds program, which offers colleagues easier access to a high-quality network of licensed counselors and double the number of sessions previously offered.

“It’s in times like these that the best workplaces separate themselves,” says Michael C. Bush, CEO of Great Place To Work. “In a challenging economy, many companies reduce investments in their people and scale back goals for diversity, equity, and inclusion. But these companies, the 100 Best, relentlessly pursue a better work experience for every employee, and if anything, double down on the employee experience regardless of title, tenure, gender, or ethnicity. These companies know this is how you increase performance, productivity, and your innovation velocity when your firm needs it the most.”
