American Express Continues 'In Partnership With' Conversation Series With PayPal CEO Dan Schulman

April 18, 2023

Glenda McNeal, President of Enterprise Strategic Partnerships leads the discussion on leadership approach, a purpose driven business strategy and Schulman’s retirement plans

American Express (NYSE:AXP) today released a new episode of the In Partnership With conversation series, pairing Glenda McNeal, President of Enterprise Strategic Partnerships at American Express, with CEOs across the company’s roster of strategic partners to discuss modern leadership. The discussion with Dan Schulman, the CEO of PayPal, explores the trust and shared values that make a strong partnership, how his passion for creating financial wellness drives PayPal’s strategy, and how he’ll approach retirement.

American Express’s relationship with PayPal dates back to 2001 when PayPal became an accepting merchant. The partnership has grown significantly since then, with the two organizations collaborating to create innovative digital payment products including Send & Split® and the ability to Pay with Membership Rewards® Points.

The conversation explores the unique partnership between the two financial services organizations and the way the companies work together with a focus on customer needs and value.

“As we do more and more in digital wallets, combining our scale and the scale of American Express with our brand trust, we need to think about our objectives and know that no one company can satisfy all of the needs of the consumer. We need to find innovative ways to better satisfy customers,” says Schulman.

The conversation also dives into how Dan’s commitment to creating financial equity and his long-time practice of Krav Maga impact his approach to leadership.

Schulman says, “There is a saying that it is expensive to be poor. I think about what we can do as a financial community to use technology to speed up transactions and make them low cost to enable financial health. When I think about how we can make a difference in the world, creating financial health is foundational.”

To close the discussion, McNeal asks Schulman his thoughts on how he’ll approach retirement when he steps down as CEO of PayPal at the end of the year.

“I am really excited about the next chapter. I don’t know if I’ll go into politics or into some NGO leadership role. But I want to travel, I want to see more of the world, and I really want to spend more time with the people I love.”
