Offer: sign up bonus doubled for taking out The Platinum Card® from American Express

March 15, 2022

15 March, 2022 – American Express has today launched a series of limited-time offers that will award generous welcome bonuses for new Cardmembers who take out The Platinum Card® from American Express.

Running until 1 June, 2022, new Cardmembers* will receive a welcome bonus of 60,000 Membership Rewards® points when they spend £6,000 in the first six months of Cardmembership. This equals the most generous welcome bonus ever offered on the Card, and is double the previous 30,000 Membership Rewards points, awarded when Cardmembers spent £4,000 in the first three months.

Existing Cardmembers will benefit from a new, enhanced 'Invite a Friend’ referral bonus, receiving a minimum of 24,000 Membership Rewards points, up from 12,000, for a successful referral. As a new Cardmember, the invited friend will receive a minimum of 5,000 additional bonus Membership Rewards points, taking their total welcome bonus to at least 65,000 Membership Rewards points.

Cardmembers earn 1 Membership Reward point for every £1 spent, meaning that a new Cardmember invited by an existing Cardmember, could earn up to 71,000 Membership Rewards points when spending £6,000 in the first six months (65,000 welcome bonus points plus 6,000 points through spend).

Membership Rewards points give American Express Cardmembers the flexibility to make the most of their rewards in a way that best suits them – from shopping to gift vouchers to holidays abroad. Cardmembers can even choose to pay off items on their monthly statement using points. When it comes to travel, Membership Rewards points can be used with a number of airline partners including British Airways, Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Virgin Atlantic, as well as Club Eurostar and three hotel chains (Hilton, Radisson and Marriott).

Examples of how these Membership Rewards points could be redeemed are below**:

  • When converted to airline loyalty currencies, 60,000 points is more than enough to book a round trip flight from London to New York or Buenos Aires, or to book two return tickets to a range of European destinations (using the airline loyalty currency).
  • 60,000 points offers £300 in gift vouchers for Amazon, Marks & Spencer, Harrods, Waterstones and more.
  • 71,000 points can cover over £300 worth of purchases when you use Shop with Points at retailers including IKEA, Halfords and John Lewis
  • Points can be donated to more than 9,000 charities through JustGiving.

Maggie Boyle, Vice President, American Express, said: “Since we refreshed The Platinum Card in 2019 it’s grown in popularity, with Cardmembers telling us they appreciate the range of travel and lifestyle benefits, from travel insurance to room upgrades to money back on shopping. We hope the offers announced today will excite both our new and existing loyal Cardmembers by offering bonus Membership Rewards points that could equate to hundreds of pounds in value across a wide and incredibly flexible choice of interests.”

The Platinum Card from American Express comes with over 30 benefits beyond the welcome bonuses announced today. These include:

  • Hotel benefits including complimentary room upgrades upon arrival (when available) and a late checkout.
  • Up to £100 a year back when spending at Harvey Nichols – a new benefit announced in January 2022.
  • Access to the world’s largest independent airport lounge access programme – Priority Pass. Access to American Express Centurion Lounges around the world, including Heathrow Terminal 3, which opened in October 2021. In total, access to over 1,300 airport lounges in 140 countries.
