Make the Most Out of Wimbledon with American Express Travel Tips for London

June 30, 2022

London is a thriving multicultural city that enjoys its rightful place as a center of modern culture while also embracing its rich and storied history at the heart of its everlasting charm. The past is wonderfully present in London’s abundant cathedrals, towers, bridges, museums, monuments, parks, pubs, and famously well-established shops, many of which have been around for centuries.

In early summer, Wimbledon, the world’s oldest tennis tournament that now enjoys global attention, is at the top of the list for attractions. Hosted annually at the Victorian-era All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, Wimbledon is known for embracing tradition, from the all-white dress code for players to serving strawberries and cream and Pimm’s cups to guests.

To help you make the most of a trip to London, our American Express Travel Consultants curated the ultimate London travel guide:

Tennis fans can visit Hampton Court Palace, the former home of Henry VIII. The infamous Tudor king was a big tennis fan himself, and the court here, built in 1625, is the oldest still in use. The 750-acre royal compound is located in the borough of Richmond-upon-Thames, southwest of central London; if you’re at Wimbledon, you’re halfway there already. Among its other attractions are an excellent art collection, a hedge maze, and a fantastical playground built in 2016 called the Magic Garden. Like the rest of historic London, there is much here to surprise and delight, whether you’ve got tennis on the mind or not.

“After the excitement of watching tennis matches, a stroll around Wimbledon or Putney Commons is a lovely way to end your day,” says American Express Travel Consultant Philippa W. This sprawling green space in Southwest London offers a refreshing taste of the countryside with its winding footpaths and abundant birdlife.

London is known for menswear in the same way Paris is for haute couture. Savile Row is rightly famous, but there is another gem for exceptional tailor shops. “Jermyn Street is a mecca for the classic man-about-town,” says American Express Travel Consultant Kelvin B. Splurge on custom or ready-to-wear items at the premium shirtmakers, shoemakers, and haberdasheries that have outfitted kings and statesmen over the ages. There are more of these on nearby St. James’s Street, which boasts the oldest hat shop (Locke & Co.) and cigar merchant (James J. Fox) in the world.

A short walk away from St. James Street is The London EDITION, a Fine Hotels + Resorts®* property, which offers a more contemporary take on classic luxury. Platinum Card® Members who book their stay at any Fine Hotels + Resorts® property through American Express Travel get an exclusive suite of benefits, such as guaranteed 4 pm check-out, complimentary daily breakfast for up to two guests, a complimentary experience credit unique to each property valued at $100 USD, and more.

Borough Market has been around for nearly a thousand years, and located at its present Southwark location since 1756. Some Londoners do their daily shopping here, but the variety of international vendors, many of which serve ready-to-eat food, makes it a must-see for visitors as well. “The smells and atmosphere are not to be missed,” says American Express Travel Consultant Philippa W. Foodies can book a room at the Shangri-La, and not just for the 360-degree city views and 54th-floor swimming pool. The luxurious 202-room hotel, another Fine Hotels + Resorts property, is also a five-minute walk away from Borough Market.

The urban bustle of Paddington Station makes it easy to forget that right around the corner is a complete change of scenery. “Little Venice is a watery oasis in the heart of London, with grand houses lining the canal and bright houseboats,” says American Express Travel Consultant Kelvin B. This artsy neighborhood is also the starting point for a 45-minute waterbus ride along Regent’s Canal. Traditional narrowboats pass the London Zoo, Regent’s Park, the celebrity hamlet of Primrose Hill, and other sights before ending at Camden Lock.

Throughout this journey – or any other - Platinum Card Members can rely on 24/7 access to American Express Travel Consultants. They can help plan a personalized itinerary of curated experiences and activities or share tips on how to make the most of Card Members’ travels.
