American Express Recognizes Colleagues with the 2022 Edward P. Gilligan Award for Innovation

July 7, 2022

American Express is celebrating the winning teams behind 10 innovative programs, products, and partnerships with the announcement of the 2022 Edward P. Gilligan Award for Innovation.

Named for Ed Gilligan, the late president of American Express and a colleague of nearly 35 years, these awards recognize Amex colleagues for their innovative thinking, collaboration, and outstanding results. Ed was always looking to the future and embodied the spirit of innovation that has enabled American Express to grow and thrive through the decades. These awards remind us that we all have the power to make a lasting impact with one idea.

American Express Chairman & CEO, Stephen J. Squeri said: “Ed was a bold thinker and pushed all of us to think bigger. These ten teams identified new and better ways to back our customers, colleagues, and communities. They embraced agility and enterprise thinking, overcoming obstacles to enhance our products and services, improve our operations and support our future success. And, importantly, they did it the right way, taking critical steps to manage risk and protect our customers, company and brand while moving the business forward.”

As part of each winning initiative, colleagues passionately worked to understand the evolving needs of our stakeholders to ensure American Express is meeting their needs. The honorees supported the following projects:

American Express Debit Network: We developed a debit-ready network, enabling issuers around the world to issue new debit products – a capability that allows us to meet the emerging payment needs of our customers.

Amex Flex: Throughout the pandemic, we acted quickly to back our colleagues’ health and safety. When it came time to return to the office, we didn’t just come back the same way we left – we developed a new way of working that enabled colleagues to work in the office, at home, or take a hybrid approach that combines both, setting us apart in the industry.

Backing Historic Small Restaurants $1+ Million Grant Program: The pandemic disproportionately impacted historic small restaurants, many of them owned by members of underrepresented communities. We moved quickly, creatively and resourcefully to develop a new innovative platform to support these small businesses and preserve history.

Digitalized Credit and Collections: To meet customers’ evolving needs and preferences, we introduced new technology to digitize the collections process.

Bank-Based Underwriting: This first-of-its-kind, global and enterprise-wide capability allows us to give our customers the buying power they need to support their business and personal lives, while appropriately managing credit risk.

Kabbage: Quickly following our acquisition of Kabbage, we launched a new suite of digital banking solutions to meet emerging customer needs and offer services “beyond the card” for our small and mid-sized business customers.

Optimized Marketing Analytics: Using automation and advance data analytics, we are now able to better measure the direct impact of our advertising, giving us new insights to enhance our marketing plans.

Enhanced Resolution of Merchant Disputes: Using digital capabilities and automation, the company transformed the way in which American Express merchant disputes are resolved to make it easier for both merchants and Card Members.

Streamlined Servicing: Following a commitment to deliver the best-in-class service every day, American Express launched an innovative platform to streamline servicing channels among customer care professionals.

U.S. Consumer Platinum Refresh: We launched new, exclusive benefits on the U.S. Consumer Platinum Card to expand its value in the premium and digital lifestyle space, while doubling down on our industry-leading travel benefits. This was the first large-scale refresh to be done in an all-virtual environment, and new Card sign-ups reached an all-time high following the launch.
