Statement on PAC Contributions

January 11, 2021

New York, NY, January 11, 2021 – The following memo from Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stephen J. Squeri was sent today to all American Express colleagues:

American Express has a long history of engaging in public policy issues that are important to our business, customers, colleagues and communities. One of the ways the company participates in the political process in the United States is through the AXP Political Action Committee (PAC). The PAC is funded through the voluntary donations of AXP colleagues, and its contributions go to legislators from both major parties. The PAC Board regularly reviews giving criteria and considers a candidate’s character and integrity when making contribution decisions.

Last week’s attempts by some congressional members to subvert the presidential election results and disrupt the peaceful transition of power do not align with our American Express Blue Box values; therefore, the AXP PAC will not support them.

The AXP PAC has not contributed to Senators who voted in favor of the objections to certain states’ Electoral College results. The PAC previously has made contributions to 22 of the 139 House members who voted in favor of the objections.

I know this has been an unsettling period for many, but, like many times throughout our history, our Blue Box Values will continue to serve as our beacon, helping us to do what is right and act with the highest level of integrity.
