Statement on Violence at U.S Capitol

New York, NY, January 6, 2021 The following memo from Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Stephen J. Squeri was sent today to all American Express colleagues:

Like many of you, I watched with profound sadness, anger and disgust at the violence and lawlessness that took place earlier today at the U.S. Capitol building. These actions were dangerous and anti-American. I joined with my fellow members of the Business Roundtable in strongly condemning this egregious assault on our democracy, as expressed in the statement the group issued earlier:

“The chaos unfolding in the nation’s capital is the result of unlawful efforts to overturn the legitimate results of a democratic election. The country deserves better. Business Roundtable calls on the President and all relevant officials to put an end to the chaos and to facilitate the peaceful transition of power.”

Tonight, as order has been restored in the House and Senate chambers, I am heartened that Congress has reconvened to certify the Electoral College results so that we can move forward to focus on putting an end to the pandemic that continues to rage across the world, as well as ensuring we maintain peace and respect for the rule of law.

While this is an anxious and unsettling time, I have faith that our democratic institutions and the principles upon which they were founded will prevail and that we will get through this together.
