In response to the devastation caused by Hurricanes Irma and Harvey, American Express Company (NYSE: AXP) today announced several ways it is helping employees, customers and communities affected by these storms.
Support for Disaster Relief Organizations
American Express has pledged a total of up to $1 million to assist with the immediate needs, including shelter and food, of hurricane victims in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and other Caribbean islands. This includes a $500,000 grant and up to $350,000 to match employee contributions to the American Red Cross as well as a $150,000 grant to Feeding America to support food banks in Southeast Texas and South Florida. In the coming months, the Company will assess opportunities to make subsequent grants to support the recovery and rebuilding of communities impacted by these disasters.
The Company is also providing a rebate of the applicable merchant discount rate to the national offices of the U.S. arms of the American Red Cross, Save the Children, AmeriCares and United Way Worldwide for charitable contributions for hurricane relief that Card Members make directly to the national offices of these organizations using their American Express® Card. The rebate, which will be given to the charities listed above, will apply retroactively to donations made to these organizations for Irma relief efforts from September 6, 2017 through September 30, 2017 and Harvey relief efforts from August 25, 2017 through September 30, 2017.
Additionally, Card Members can use U.S. American Express Cards or Membership Rewards® points for charitable contributions to organizations, including the Red Cross, through Members Give.
Employee and Community Assistance
American Express is committed to providing support to help employees recover from the storms. It is making a wide variety of resources available to employees affected by Irma and Harvey including access to personal assistants to help source emergency supplies and disaster resources 24-hours a day, back up childcare options, employee assistance counselor support and more.
Additionally, the Company has made its Plantation, Florida facility, which is not in use, available to Broward County for disaster relief efforts.
Card Member Assistance
American Express is continuing to work with Card Members impacted by hurricanes Irma and Harvey. For Card Members in counties that have been designated by FEMA for individual assistance in Texas, American Express will automatically waive or refund any late fees and return check fees from August 26, 2017 through October 1, 2017. For Card Members in counties designated by FEMA for individual assistance in Florida, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands as well as other impacted islands in the Caribbean, American Express will provide the same relief from September 6, 2017 through October 6, 2017.
