American Express Company today announced the appointment of Brett Loper to the position of Senior Vice President of Government Affairs, based in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Loper will lead the team responsible for representing the company’s interests with federal and state policymakers. Spending 18 years at the center of U.S. politics and government, he has the ideal mix of rich experience, deep knowledge and outstanding leadership skills.
In his most recent position, Mr. Loper served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Policy Director for Speaker of the House John Boehner, where he led all legislative and policy strategy, and directed the work of 10 policy experts. He played a key role in crafting and negotiating virtually all major legislation that passed through Congress over the past two and a half years.
Mr. Loper has viewed government affairs from multiple perspectives and is well versed in a wide range of legal, regulatory and tax issues. Prior to his work with Speaker Boehner, he held a number of senior-level positions on the Hill, including that of Minority Staff Director of the Ways & Means Committee. Earlier in his career, he served in the federal Office of Management and Budget, and as chief lobbyist for AdvaMed, the medical device industry’s trade association.
Mr. Loper earned an MBA from George Washington University and a BA from Villanova University, where he has taught as an adjunct professor and serves on the Advisory Board of the Center for Marketing and Public Policy Research.
He lives in Arlington, Va. with his wife, Ginger, and their three daughters.
