The American Express Leadership Academy Celebrates its Fifth Year by Welcoming a New Class of Nonprofit Leaders and Social Entrepreneurs into Training Programs
NEW YORK,  May 6, 2013 --

Today, American Express celebrated five years of training emerging, nonprofit leaders with the tenth installment of the company's flagship American Express Leadership Academy welcoming the newest class in New York City. Simultaneously, American Express is holding a Leadership Academy at the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Ariz. Next week, the company is holding the second installment of the American Express Emerging Innovators Leadership Boot Camp. Ten other Leadership Academies will be hosted during 2013 in countries around the globe.

Launched in 2008, The American Express Leadership Academy is a global training program designed to develop the next generation of leaders in the nonprofit and social sectors. Participants have trained on the personal, business and leadership skills needed to run a successful nonprofit enterprise in the "new normal" of today's complex economic climate. By the end of 2013, American Express will have hosted over 20 Leadership Academy sessions in six countries, including the United Kingdom, India, Japan, Mexico and Canada, benefitting more than 10,000 nonprofit and social sector leaders.

"Nonprofit and social sector organizations are tasked with addressing some of the world's greatest challenges," said Timothy J. McClimon, President, American Express Foundation. "And it will take a group of leaders with the emotional and business intelligence to create solutions. The American Express Leadership Academy has proven to be an effective tool for fostering a pipeline of talent to ensure these organizations thrive in the future."

The American Express Leadership Academy
Beginning today through May 10, American Express and The Center for Creative Leadership will host 48 emerging leaders from nonprofit organizations including MDRC, World Monuments Fund, Youth Service America, National Council of La Raza, Sundance Institute, United Way of NYC and Land Trust Alliance. Participants in the week-long program will hear from American Express senior executives, including the company's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Kenneth I. Chenault and Chief Marketing Officer, John D. Hayes. Other speakers include George Rupp, President of International Rescue Committee.

Another 31 emerging leaders from 10 international nonprofit organizations will join faculty from Thunderbird School of Global Management to participate in an American Express Leadership Academy happening simultaneously from the school's Glendale, Ariz. campus.

American Express: Developing New Leaders for Tomorrow
One of American Express' three platforms for its philanthropy is Developing New Leaders for Tomorrow. More than 10,000 emerging nonprofit and social sector leaders worldwide have benefitted from American Express leadership programs. Launched in 2008, the American Express Leadership Academy addresses the growing deficit of leadership talent in the nonprofit sector.
