WASHINGTON DC,  June 14, 2010 --

The National Business Group on Health, a non-profit association of large employers, today honored American Express® for its commitment and dedication to promoting a healthy workplace and encouraging their workers and families to support and maintain healthy lifestyles.

American Express was among 66 employers that received the 2010 Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles award at the Leadership Summit sponsored by the National Business Group on Health's Institute on Innovation in Workforce Well-being. American Express received a Gold Award for its revamped wellness program, Healthy Living. The program, which launched in 2009, is encouraging preventive care and healthy lifestyles among American Express employees and their families. This marks the second consecutive year that American Express has been recognized as a top employer for healthy lifestyles by the National Business Group on Health, receiving a Silver Award in 2009.

"As a company with a rich history of service that drives everything we do, our employees are our most important asset," said Anita Shaughnessy, vice president global benefits, US Healthcare & Wellness, American Express. "Our Healthy Living program is an important investment to inspire and drive health and wellness among American Express employees and their families. This program not only improves employee health and engagement, it also enhances business productivity and performance and helps control long-term health costs."

Healthy Living is a comprehensive wellness program with tools and resources for managing health, including health assessments, onsite medical clinics, lifestyle and health coaching and disease management programs.

"We are delighted to recognize American Express for its innovation and commitment to providing lifestyle improvement programs designed to encourage healthier lifestyles for their employees," said Helen Darling, President of the National Business Group on Health. "American Express and its management team recognize just how important a healthy workforce is to increasing productivity and controlling health care costs, and we congratulate them on receiving this award."

Winners of the Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles awards were honored in one of three categories: Platinum, for established workplace well-being programs with measurable success and documented outcomes; Gold, for creating cultural and environmental changes that support employees who are committed to long-term behavior changes; and Silver, for employers who have launched significant programs or services to promote living a healthier lifestyle.
