National Geographic Society's BioBlitzAmerican Express is the national sponsor of National Geographic Society's 2016 BioBlitz, which will host more than 100 events in national parks.
BioBlitz events engage the public to become 'citizen scientists' for a day, asking
them to catalog biodiversity in a specific park location, over a 24 hour period. At last
year's BioBlitz event, 6,000 people participated in identifying over 400 park species in a single day.
Recognizing the value these events play in engaging the public in conservation of their local
parks, the National Park Service and National Geographic Society (NGS) made a 10-year commitment
to BioBlitz, which will culminate with the program's national expansion in 2016. With support from
American Express, NGS will expand BioBlitz from one event to a multi-state project, empowering
volunteers across the U.S. to document biodiversity in their parks. This year, more than 100
individual BioBlitz events will be held in national parks, engaging between 35,000 to 50,000 volunteers.
Find Your Park Days of ServiceIn partnership with American Express, the Student Conservation Association is
organizing a series of large-scale volunteer events in celebration of the 2016 National Park Service Centennial.
Find Your Park Days of Service events are occurring
throughout 2016 on national days of service such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Earth Day, National Trails Day,
September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance, and Veteran's Day. These events will engage more than
6,400 community members who will dedicate more than 25,000 hours to conserving and revitalizing 200,000 acres of
public land and green space in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.
Save the ParkSave the Park is a new, mobile game for iOS devices that allows players to become virtual volunteers, helping conserve and preserve the U.S. National Parks for all to enjoy.
Created by Games for Change and American Express,
Save the Park gives
players the opportunity to 'virtually volunteer' so they can experience the types of activities and impacts volunteers have in parks. In the game, you can
experience how volunteers help conserve and preserve America's national parks. Play all four volunteer characters – Environment Champion, Wildlife
Lover, Citizen Scientist and Culture Concierge – each representing a different type of volunteer. By successfully accomplishing
volunteer tasks, you earn points to unlock additional levels across three park environments.
To drive additional resources to the cause, the American Express Foundation will make a $1 donation to the National Park Foundation for each download of Save the Park occurring on or before December 31, 2016, up to $50,000. The donation will support NPF's park conservation and stewardship work.

Veteran EngagementAmerican Express is partnering with leading veterans organizations to engage their members in service to parks and public lands.
Disaster Mitigation in National Parks: In an effort to protect and revitalize U.S. parks and public lands, Team Rubicon is developing a new program to engage its veteran volunteer members in disaster mitigation and habitat improvement projects with the U.S. Department of the Interior and its land management agencies. Since its first mission to Haiti in 2010, Team Rubicon has deployed more than 3,500 veterans, who have provided over 250,000 hours of disaster relief through 103 deployments. Response efforts include: Hurricane Sandy, Texas Flooding, and the Nepal Earthquake.
National Parks Service Platoons: American Express is providing funding to sponsor four regional Service Platoons, with The Mission Continues, focused on park revitalization and stewardship in New York, Miami, Phoenix and San Francisco. The Mission Continues empowers veterans, facing the challenge of adjusting to life at home, to find new missions. They redeploy veterans in their communities, so that their shared legacy will be one of action and service.
The Mission Continues' Service Platoons program engages veterans in service to their communities. A service platoon is a team of veteran and non-veteran volunteers who mobilize together to solve a specific challenge in their community.
Service Platoon missions range from mentoring students and rehabilitating schools, to addressing poverty and hunger, to park and public space revitalization efforts.
